Inside the Book

Three loves.

Watercolour of a newborn asleep on a parent's chest

First Love

The love you were given before you could ask for it. The arms that came in the dark, the whole meaning of safe before you had the word.

Watercolour of two teenagers walking side by side down a school hallway

True Love

The love you chose. A hallway, a jolt, the months of finding the courage to say the true thing to someone who might turn away.

Watercolour of a laughing father on the floor playing with his two young daughters

Unconditional Love

The love that pours out of you. From the first cry in a delivery room to the phone call that starts the whole story over again.

About the Book

About the book.

There are three great loves in a life. The one we are given as children, before we can ask for it. The one we choose. And the one we pour into a child of our own, which has no bottom and no edge.

Unconditional Love walks through all three from the inside. You are not told about a father in a delivery room; you are standing there. One idea runs underneath: unconditional love does not arrive as a feeling. It arrives as a question, the same one, asked from the first hour to the last. A light thread of science follows the story, gathered at the back with citations, and the final pages are left for the reader's own memory.

For new and expecting parents, parents of grown children, and anyone who has ever been someone's child.

About the Author

Sameer Amini.

Sameer Amini writes about the things people assume they already understand. By day he teaches real estate in Toronto, a job that is mostly about explaining, and he came to writing the same way: by trying to explain something to himself until it finally made sense. Then his daughters arrived and changed what needed explaining. He lives in Toronto with his family.
